Mr. Richard Marion Harris, 94

~~ Richard M. Harris of Gainesville Georgia died in Gainesville on Saturday, February the 8th, 2020, following a brief illness, at the age of 94.

Richard was married to Mary Virginia (Mckibbon) Harris, who died five years ago. The two of them spent almost all of their adult lives in Gainesville and were always active happy participants in the comings and goings of the city they loved.

Richard and Mary Virginia had two daughters, Marie Harris and Marsha Meadows. Marie died in 2014 and Marsha lives in Highlands, NC with her husband, Jim.

Richard had three grandchildren, Trey Wilson and Rich Meadows in Gainesville and Lynn Wilson in central Florida. He also had two great grandchildren, and two great-great granddaughters also in Florida.

His little brother and best friend Warren lives in Scottsdale, AZ with his wife Karen.

Richard, originally from Decatur, served in the Pacific during WW II, graduated from the University of Georgia after he mustered out of the Navy, and moved to Gainesville where he worked in executive positions with J. D. Jewell and McKibbon Brothers.

Richard was an accomplished private pilot and boat skipper, especially if he had Mary Virginia to guide and navigate. He was an eager and energetic golfer and gave up the sport only last year.

Richard and Mary Virginia were avid and curious world travelers and visited more than 60 countries over the past years. They loved their home and garden on the lake and the many wonderful friends made during their long happy lives in Gainesville.

Richard was one of the truly great, kind and generous souls from the Greatest Generation. We will all miss his beautiful smile.

Graveside services will be held Friday, February, 14th, 2020, at 11:00 am at Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville. Reverend Scott Hearn will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a tribute gift in Richard’s name to, Atlanta Botanical Gardens-Gainesville ((404.888.4760), www.atlantabg.org.
